  • The satellite positioning seems to be right on and positioning after start-up was quick. …I was able to get within 5-7 feet of everything I marked.
  • Everyone in the group said that radio transmission was crystal clear, they could hear my transmissions better than anyone elses. Don't get me wrong the Garmin in definetly a GPS first and radio second but I was very pleased with its two-way capabilities. Police warning residents about thefts from vehicles

York Regional Police are reminding drivers to secure their vehicles and not leave valuables inside when leaving them unattended.

This is good advice for all vehicle owners.

In most of these thefts, the vehicles were left unlocked, insecure and with valuables left inside in plain view. This easy window of opportunity for the thieves resulted in the theft of cash, laptop computers, sporting equipment, electronic equipment like portable GPS ststems, cameras and expensive sunglasses.

One of the best ways to protect your valuable GPS system is to remove it from your vehicle when not in use. A Weighted GPS Dash Mount/Carrying Case is a perfect solution. The GPS is easily removed and installed in seconds. When stowed safely in the carrying case there is no trace of a GPS unit to entice thieves.

Crime prevention tips.

  • Lock the car.
  • Park in well-lit areas and parking lots.
  • Consider installing motion lights around the driveway and entrances.
  • Consider installing antitheft devices such as visible steering-wheel locks, ignition kill switches, alarms and vehicle-tracking systems to deter thieves.
  • Don’t leave the car running if it’s not occupied.
  • Don’t make it any easier for the thief to enter the vehicle. Lock and close all windows.
  • Always place valuables in the trunk, out of sight or don’t leave items in the car at all.

Avoid becoming a victim of this type of theft. By following these common sense safety tips, people can protect themselves and their property. Crime prevention is the responsibility of both the public and the police.

Jury Duty Scam - Identity Theft

Please Do Not Delete Without Reading!

Pass this on to your grown children. This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado. This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system.

The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Check it out here:
http://www.fbi.gov/page2/june06/jury_scams060206.htm

And it also been verified here as well:

Yep! Its true

Please make sure to pass this on!

GPS Systems Are Also Recommended by U.S. Coast Guard

ESSEXVILLE — The windy conditions forecasted for Labor Day weekend might not make a boat the most ideal place to vacation, but the U.S. Coast Guard office out of Essexville is looking out for those who do decide to venture out.

NBC25 talked with Petty Officer Max Duncan about some key safety measures to keep in mind when on the water. He said boaters need to make sure they have the right kind of life jackets with them. The right kind includes those approved by the U.S. Coast Guard, and say so on the packaging.

There are other items needed as well.

“If you are out on the Saginaw Bay or any open water in the Great Lakes you’re going to need flares at night,” he said. Whistles, lights and portable GPS systems are also recommended by U.S. Coast Guard officials.

Technology Leads More Park Visitors Into Trouble

Handheld GPS units are getting outdoor enthusiasts in to more and more trouble theses days. Here is a quote from a NY Times article By LESLIE KAUFMAN, Published: August 21, 2010

Far more common but no less perilous, park workers say, are visitors who arrive with cellphones or GPS devices and little else — sometimes not even water — and find themselves in trouble. Such visitors often acknowledge that they have pushed themselves too far because they believe that in a bind, the technology can save them.

It does not always work out that way. “We have seen people who have solely relied on GPS technology but were not using common sense or maps and compasses, and it leads them astray,” said Kyle Patterson, a spokesman for Rocky Mountain National Park, just outside Denver.
Be smart and use your Handheld GPS unit to avoid problems and enhance your outdoor experience.
